How I Went from Designer to Bridge Builder

A few years ago, I started to feel a strange itch—one I couldn’t quite scratch. It wasn’t something I’d ever experienced in all my years as a self-employed designer. At first, I couldn’t put my finger on it, but over time, the realization hit me: I wanted more from my career. I still loved what I did, but the spark that used to drive me was starting to dim. It felt like I was just going through the motions.

For as long as I could remember, Monday mornings had been my favorite time of the week. I’d jump out of bed, ready to tackle my projects and connect with clients. My husband used to laugh about how, while most people dreaded the Sunday scaries, I was counting down the hours until Monday morning. I’d always been so grateful for my career as a designer and the incredible clients I worked with. But something had shifted, and I wasn’t sure what it was—or how to fix it.

Then one afternoon, I stumbled upon an ad for a brand strategy class. On a whim, I applied. A few days later, I found out I’d been accepted, and before I knew it, I was diving into something completely new. Little did I know, that one decision would completely change the way I thought about my work.

Through that experience, I uncovered what had been nagging at me. The itch was my younger self nudging me, reminding me why I’d left corporate design in the first place. Somewhere along the way, I had become an order taker—focusing on completing design tasks instead of offering the depth of knowledge and creativity I had to give. What I truly wanted was to be a trusted advisor—a partner who could sit at the table with my clients and help them build something meaningful.

As a designer (and an unapologetic people-pleaser), falling into the role of an order taker had been easy. I love creating, and I genuinely enjoy working with my clients, so it felt natural. But I’ve since realized I have so much more to offer. By combining strategic thinking with my well-honed design skills, I can bring even greater value to my clients. Together, we can build brands that truly connect with their audiences. It’s the ultimate win-win.

Today, I see myself as more than just a designer—I’m a bridge builder. I help connect my clients with their audience using a combination of research, messaging, positioning, and creative expertise. I love partnering with business owners and marketing professionals—whether your business is big or small—to spread the word about your products, services, and mission. My goal is to help your brand thrive and grow in ways that truly matter.
